The Thomas Mason Archives—a textile treasure of 700 volumes, dating back to 1845
Platinum by Thomas Mason is a collection of over 1,000 fabrics of incomparable softness and luster with yarn counts ranging from 140 to 300. Founded in 1796, Thomas Mason is the world’s preeminent shirting mill. The first to offer 200 and 240 yarn count fabrics, Thomas Mason adds to its legacy of industry leadership with this season’s introduction of 300 yarn count fabrics. Platinum is offered exclusively by Hamilton Shirts and is available at our Houston workshop, Barneys New York, Mitchells of Westport, Pockets of Dallas, Richards of Greenwich and Stanley Korshak of Dallas.
Creating Platinum fabrics requires commitment to excellence at every step in the process. This starts with the procurement of the best available cotton, Egypt’s Giza 45. The cotton is then spun into yarns which are later woven into fabric according to the designer’s precise requirements.
Cotton and Yarn
Platinum fabrics begin as Egypt’s finest cotton, Giza 45. The particular climatic condition and fertile soils along the Nile and around the delta give rise to the best cotton in the world. Giza 45 represents less than a half percent of Egypt’s total annual cotton production.

Giza 45’s thin, long, smooth nature makes possible the spinning of the softest, most supple yarns. Yarn quality is measured by its thickness, or yarn count. Platinum fabrics are available in yarn counts of 140, 170, 200, 240 and 300. All are two-ply, meaning that two yarns have been twisted around each other to create a composite yarn of greater durability that resists the normal tendency to shed or pill.
Design
Much like an artist gives life to canvas or stone, a fabric designer shapes raw yarn, creating the nuanced textures and vibrant colors that distinguish Platinum fabrics. What is the perfect scale of the stripe? Shade of the color? Weave of the cloth? These are decisions made by the designer. Thomas Mason designers rely heavily on the mill’s archives for inspiration. The archives are a textile treasure dating back to 1845 and consisting of over 700 volumes.
Weaving
Weaving is the execution of the fabric designer’s vision. It’s a craft that requires obsessive attention to detail. Every meter of Platinum fabric is examined by an experienced cloth inspector.

Through perpetual research and development, Thomas Mason continues to make new fabric designs possible. For example, this year Thomas Mason introduces 300 yarn count fabrics. This is especially remarkable when you consider that they were already one of the world’s only mills capable of producing 240 yarn count fabrics.
